Zusammenfassung
Disaster planning helps to protect libraries and other information centres. Natural disasters or other damage caused by man or malfunctioning equipment can easily ruin media. Through prevention, preparation, well-considered salvage and restoration, greater damage to collections can be avoided. There are various threats to Austrian libraries. There have not been many catastrophes in the past, but the flood in the summer of 2002 damaged at least one library in Austria. Pipe leakages are another important factor to be considered. Water is also a problem when fires are fought. In the Anglo-American countries disaster planning is a more common topic; however in middle Europe it is rarely an issue. There are many fire prevention plans to protect people, but the safety of media is rarely considered. This paper summarises the basic rules of prevention, preparation, salvage and restoration of media. The creation of a disaster plan will be shown step by step. Anglo-American reports are reviewed, examples from the recent past in Austria are added. Finally the paper also includes forms for disaster plans that can be transformed for personal use in Austrian libraries and other collections.
